Of course, hiring a carpet cleaning machine will mean that you will be able to do all the cleaning yourself whenever it suits you without bringing any strangers into your home. Is it worth renting a carpet cleaning machine?
There are many factors you should consider before you rent a DIY carpet and upholstery cleaning machine. Firstly, you may be easily swayed to believe that those machines deliver the excellent results as their manufacturers advertise. However as soon as you get to use it you may quickly realise that you have fallen into their great marketing trick. Unfortunately, those machines will often not meet your expectations. Moreover, they will leave your carpets and upholstery wet for as much as few days!
How do I know this? As part of our customer survey, I always ask whether the carpet or upholstery have been previously cleaned by another company or by the customers themselves. Over the years, Happy Clean have gathered more than enough feedback from our past customers. Most of them have tried to do the cleaning themselves with hired machines, and guess what? They wouldn’t do it again… The truth is that most of them were not happy with the poor machine performance, long drying times, and a lot hidden extras they weren’t aware of!
Before you rent a carpet cleaning machine, you will have to leave a deposit and proof of address in the store for security purposes. Then, you have to allow yourself some time the pick up and drop off the machine.
Even worse, you need to go through the hassle of visiting a busy supermarket. That’s if you didn’t go for the home delivery option. Now, that you have the machine, you actually have to spend time using it at home, and you have to make the most out if it. Bare in mind, using those machines is quite time consuming and will take hours as they are not as powerful as commercial grade cleaning machines. Even then, you are not guaranteed any decent results. That’s the last thing you want to see after spending hours doing ‘deep cleaning’ around the house. What a way to spend a day off work huh?
Before you rent a steam cleaning machine you may firstly ask yourself this: “How much do I actually know about carpet and upholstery cleaning?“, “What if I damage the machine I’ve hired?”, or ” Can I damage my favourite armchair or sofa because I have been too aggressive with the detergents and/or water whilst cleaning?“, “Do I know what I need to do to completely remove wine or odour from my carpet?“, “Is it safe to use the detergents of my choice around my children and pets?“.
All in all, our opinion is that it’s not worth to lease a carpet cleaning equipment. Hiring a professional company to do the job for you has multiple benefits compared to a DIY cleaning.
How much does it cost to rent a carpet cleaner?
To hire a carpet cleaning machine in Dublin you would have to spend at least €26.99 for the machine rental alone. Bare in mind the machine alone is not sufficient to carry out the cleaning. In addition to this price, depending on your situation, you need to pay for various detergents such as carpet high foot traffic cleaner, pet-stain detergent, upholstery cleaner, spot and stain remover, as well as anti foaming solution and deodoriser. There is also a small fee to pay if you would like to rent an upholstery attachment for cleaning fabrics.
Lastly, you then have to think about how you’re going to collect the cleaning machine you’re planning on to hire. You can either spend time and fuel money picking it from the store and dropping it back up again after you finish cleaning, or you can arrange a delivery and collection service which will cost you more. Now, after adding all of these up, a very attractive price of €26.99 for using the machine easily doubles, if not triples its value. So be aware of all the costs that you must consider before hiring.
How much does it cost to have a company clean your carpet?
At Happy Clean, we always say “Hiring an amateur can be way more expensive than hiring a professional!” Why is that? Well, even though at first sight it can seem dearer to get a trained and insured cleaning company, it’s definitely worth it.
We are an affordable carpet cleaning company in Dublin, not the cheapest though. And most important, for the price we ask, we deliver a reliable and professional service. But how much does it actually cost getting carpet and upholstery cleaned? For example cleaning the carpet in a 4 bedroom two storey house (living room, bedrooms, stairs and landing) will be cost roughly €250-€270. For stairs and landing in a two storey standard house, the price is €60. If you’re looking for upholstery cleaning, price for a 5 seater suite is between €120-€150.
If you take into consideration how much a new carpet or sofa would cost, cleaning is definitely a lot more affordable. Over the years, we have helped a lot of our customers save huge amounts of money just by cleaning their items. Here’s what some of our clients say about us:
Chris did a great job with carpets and sofas in the apartment we recently moved. We didn’t have too much time and he kindly offered a same day service. He was ready in front of the home at the time he promised. Now, the carpets and sofas are like replaced, completely refreshed with no stains. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a good service.Mihrican Ozturk – 5 star Google Review
Absolutely thrilled with the service provided. Our couches were in a bad way and I was looking up new ones when I came across an ad for couch cleaning. It wasn’t as expensive as I thought it would be so I said I’d give it a go before I buy new ones. Well, they saved me a fortune. I can’t believe how well they came out, they look new. The lads were on time, professional and it was all done in under 2 hours. Now there’s a lovely lemon smell in my sitting room and nobody is allowed eat in there!!!!Emalo – 5 star Google Review
Home carpet cleaners are not as good as professional ones
Domestic machines don’t deliver the same results as professional carpet and upholstery cleaning machines. They simply don’t have the same vacuum suction and water pressure, which will provide the deepest cleaning results. Those machines come with small pumps, which are unable to flush the dirt out of the carpet effectively. Commercial carpet cleaning machines like the ones we operate have fully adjustable high-pressure pumps up to 800PSI. This enables the users to control how much detergent needs to be injected into your carpets, depending on the level of soiling.
In addition to that, professional machines are fitted with powerful multistage vacuums. Those lift the water out of your carpets leaving them completely dry in as little as few hours and not days! Professional steam cleaning service should be carried out with hot water. Domestic machines use the water as it is. Professional cleaning machines go beyond that and have heating elements built into them, which heat it up. This helps provide even better cleaning results and quicker drying times! At Happy Clean, we always aim to provide the best possible carpet and upholstery cleaning service in Dublin.
Best carpet cleaning methods
There are different carpet cleaning methods, from encapsulation to steam cleaning, and deep wet cleaning. For our cleaning services, we mainly use encapsulation, and deep wet cleaning. Most of professional cleaning companies will choose the best method based on type of carpet, and level of soil.
Encapsulation is a carpet maintenance method. In this process, the encapsulation chemical is sprayed onto and then brushed into the carpet using a cylindrical or rotary brush machine or bonnet. Since this is a low-moisture system, carpets can be dry in a couple of hours and put back into use promptly. We use this method mainly for regular carpet cleaning in office spaces with low to medium traffic. Although some carpet cleaners use this in residential homes as well, it is not as effective as a deep wet cleaning.
Deep wet cleaning method
The deep wet cleaning method is often mixed up with the steam cleaning. That is because some cleaners use high temperature water that will create steam when released. But this cleaning procedure is not based on steam power, it’s based on chemical use. The deep wet cleaning method is used for heavy soiled carpets, in residential, and commercial properties. As professionals, we know exactly what chemistry to use in order to tackle the most stubborn dirt and stains. In our van, we have over 20 spot cleaners, especially created for any type of stain.
Steam cleaning method
The steam cleaning method is based on hot water temperature, without using any chemicals. Although customers often ask us to steam clean their carpet, we need to explain that some types of fibers (like wool for example) cannot be cleaned at high temperatures. In that case, we use wool safe chemicals that will remove the dirt. For example, all the products we use are safe for pets and children, as well as eco friendly, so if you decide to rent a carpet cleaning machine, make sure the chemicals you use are suitable for your needs. Most times, steam cleaning is not as effective as deep wet cleaning.
Therefore, when we are dealing with a soiled carpet, we recommend a deep wet cleaning instead of encapsulation or steam cleaning as that will remove all the dirt from the bottom of the pile, and not just the one on the surface. Depending on the type of carpet, the usage of hot water will improve the results of this method.
How often should a carpet be cleaned?
In general, the carpet should be professionally cleaned once or twice per year. But some of our regular customers do it three or more times per year.
The answer to “how often should a carpet be cleaned?” is not the same for everyone. Imagine a household with 3 dogs and two toddlers compared to a professional couple who are in the office 10-12 hours per day. Obviously, we can’t recommend the same intervals between cleanings.
One thing we can definitely say is, don’t wait for the carpet to be extremely dirty before you reach out to a professional service. The more often you clean it, the longer the life of the carpet will be. That is because the small particles of dirt in the carpet will wear it if it’s there for too long. This leads to flattening the pile, creating traffic lines or even breaks in the carpet.
How long until you can walk on carpet after cleaning?
When we professionally clean a carpet, the average drying time is 4-6 hours, unlike when you use a rented carpet cleaning equipment (it can take up to 5 days on average). After professional cleaning, carpet is left touch dry or a bit damp and we recommend waiting to fully dry before you walk on it.
Unfortunately, when you rent a carpet cleaning equipment, the carpet stays wet for days. This will allow the mould spores to grow in the pile, hence the bad scent after. We are often called by people who used a DIY equipment and notice a “wet dog smell” coming from their carpet and rugs. That can happen either when there are pets in the house and they didn’t use odour neutralisers and especially created chemicals, or when the carpet took too long to dry after the cleaning.
We pride ourselves for doing a professional job and here’s a review we got from a happy customer of ours who previously used a different cleaning company:
Very happy with this service! When we moved out of our rental a few months ago, I had another carpet cleaning company, with a quote that came in €20 less than Happy Clean, do the job. It was terrible! The carpets smelled gross, were wet for days and they didn’t even try to get the stains out. This time, in our new house, I decided to try Happy Clean and they did an amazing job-the carpets smell great, they dried in 6 hours and they were even able to get paint off the carpet. I’ll definitely use them again, it is definitely worth using them, even if the quote comes in a bit higher than other companies.Amber Cushing – 5 star Google Review
