Types of leather used for furniture

There are three types of leather used for making furniture, pigmented, aniline and semi-aniline.

1. Pigmented leather

Pigmented is the most durable and easy to clean leather. This type of leather is the mostly highly treated. During processing, the hides are buffed, helping to reduce scars and veining or branding. The leather is then coated with a colour pigment before the grain pattern is embossed into it. This makes the finished leather highly durable, more consistent, blemish free and easy to maintain. Pigmented leather is both very hard wearing and more resistant to fading and scratching. Because of the high level of protection, for this type of leather you can use a damp cloth to keep it clean.

2. Aniline leather

Aniline leather is a natural looking type of leather, dyed only with soluble dyes. Any visible variations on the surface of the undyed leather such as visible pores, scars, or other blemishes remain visible. Therefore, only good quality leather can be as aniline leather. Aniline leather sofas requires special maintenance to keep it in top condition and they cannot be cleaned with water based products.

3. Semi-aniline leather

Semi-aniline leather is a combination between the pigmented and aniline leather. It is more durable than aniline leather but it still keeps the natural look.

The easiest way to differentiate aniline from pigmented leather is the water test. Just put a drop of water on the sofa and rub it in. If it stays on surface, then you are dealing with pigmented leather. If it penetrates the leather leaving a stain then it is aniline leather. Our leather cleaning technicians can only clean pigmented leather, as the product we use are water based.
