Children are famously messy eaters, especially when it comes to melty foods like chocolate. Whether it’s a hot chocolate spill or from wiping their hands clean after eating a candy bar, you’re likely to see chocolate stains on your carpet at some point. Luckily, stain removal is not difficult. The important thing is to start cleaning as soon as you can.
Dampen the Area
First, you want to scoop or blot up any large visible pieces of chocolate on the affected area. Then, wet a cloth with some clean water, and dab the cloth over the stained area. This will help to loosen up anything that’s stuck in the carpet fibres.
Use a Cleaning Solution
Next, you want to take a mild cleaning solution and dab it onto the stain. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the fabric. Similarly, you want to avoid rubbing the solution in, as this could just push the stain in deeper. Diluted dish soap and gentle dabbing motions should suffice. Let it sit for a few minutes on the carpet to further dissolve the stain.
Rinse and Repeat
After letting the soap sit over the area, rinse it out by dabbing with cold, clean water. If any of the stain still remains, you can repeat the steps of applying more cleaning solution. If you are still having problems with staining after attempting to clean the area twice, it may be a good idea to call a professional cleaner in. Some stains will just be too stubborn for even the most diligent person to clean by themselves. If not, and you’ve been successful in removing it, then rinse, blot dry with a clean towel. Allow the area to finish drying completely. You can then vacuum the area to ensure the carpet returns to it original texture and shape.
